Legal Borderlands refer to complex spaces and times where the United States of America has used the law in order to establish influence over an area. The United States was founded on a distinct set of laws, which has also shaped the identity of the American people. Notions of democracy and freedom are set alongside a history in which the United States has characterized itself as a hero in every story. However, the reality is that the US has always been a country on a quest for power over anything else. This is something that can be clearly demonstrated through borderlands.

      It is important that students have the chance to learn about these concepts from all perspectives rather than solely learning about history from the view of the West. Students deserve to be given a more detailed and objective glance into the history of their country. Legal Borderlands become a clear space in which students can better understand how the United States has interfered, influenced, and changed places into a space that is meant to benefit itself, without regard for others. We want our students to be global citizens with empathy and critical understanding. If students cannot learn about events in history in various ways, then there is a risk that students will become shut off to examining the world with a more analytical eye.
